A smooth trigger press separates good shooters from great shooters. Master this skill and watch your accuracy improve.

The mission

You have a perfect sight picture. Your grip is solid. Your stance is stable. You squeeze the trigger and the shot goes wide. Sound familiar. The problem is almost always trigger control.

Trigger control is the art of pressing the trigger without disturbing the sight alignment. It sounds simple but it takes practice.

The press not the pull
Do not pull the trigger. Press it. Pulling implies jerking or snatching. Pressing implies steady even pressure. The trigger should move rearward in one smooth motion.

Trigger finger placement
Place the pad of your index finger on the trigger. Not the joint. Not the tip. The pad gives you the best leverage and feel. If your finger is too far in your shots go right. Too far out they go left. Find the sweet spot.

Trigger reset
When you fire a shot keep the trigger depressed. Let it reset forward just enough to hear or feel the click. Then press again. This shortens your trigger stroke and speeds up follow up shots.

Follow through
Your trigger press does not stop at the break. Follow through means maintaining pressure after the shot. Let the trigger reset naturally. Keep your sight picture. This builds consistency.

Dry fire practice
Dry fire is the best way to improve trigger control. Unload your firearm. Clear the chamber. Pick a small target on the wall. Press the trigger slowly. The front sight should not move. If it moves start over.

Final thought
Trigger control is the most important shooting fundamental. Master it and every other skill falls into place.
